The Goat Horn is a 1972 Bulgarian dramatic feature film, starring Anton Gorchev and Katya Paskaleva. The film is set in 17th-century Bulgaria, where Kara Ivan’s wife is raped and killed by four local Ottoman feudals. Having disguised his daughter as a boy and trained her in the masculine art of warfare over a period of ten years, Kara Ivan sets out to take revenge. Best remembered for its extraordinary camera work, The Goat Horn was both a critical success—winning more prizes than any Bulgarian film before or since, including the Special Jury Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival—and popular at the box office, with a domestic audience of 3 million, out of the 8 million-strong Bulgarian population at the time of its release. The Goat Horn was the third of four feature films directed by Metodi Andonov before his untimely death in 1974 at the age of 42.
Professor Rossen Djagalov from NYU's Department of Russian and Slavic Studies will introduce the film and lead a Q&A session after the screening. Professor Djagalov's main research interests lie in global socialist culture, particularly in the linkages between cultural producers and audiences in the Soviet Union and in other countries.
