Please join the East Central European Center at the Harriman Institute and the Consulate General of Serbia for a screening of the film Zona Zamfirova (2002), followed by a Q&A with lead actress Katarina Radivojević. Run time: 104 minutes. Zona Zamfirova is a 2002 Serbian film based on the 1906 novel of the same title by Stevan Sremac. It is a love story about the problematic relationship of two young people from different social classes. The action of this comic melodrama—which is interspersed with songs of various genres from southern and eastern Serbia—is set in the city of Niš in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. While focusing on the protagonists’ struggles for personal freedom, it reflects some of the important political and economic changes that took place in Serbia after the overthrow of Ottoman rule. Zona Zamfirova was the first major Serbian movie project to be produced after the fall of the regime of Slobodan Milosevic in 2001. It became the biggest Serbian blockbuster of all time, with over 1,300,000 tickets sold in cinemas across Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia (no data are available for Slovenia, Croatia and Macedonia). Katarina Radivojević is Serbian actress who plays the title role in Zona Zamfirova. Katarina is from Belgrade, where she graduated from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts at the University of Arts, and where she started her acting career, working both in film and television. Her most important films are Policajac sa Petlovog Brda (1992), Zona Zamfirova (2002), Lavirint (2002), Pljačka Trećeg rajha (2004), Potera za Sreć(k)om (2005) and Čarlston za Ognjenku (2008).
